How to use it

Type a 5-digit ZIP code, or a city and state like “Duluth, MN”, and press Show my sunset. You get your sunset on Saturday, Oct 31 and on Sunday, Nov 1, what the sky looks like at 5 pm the Monday after, how long it stays light on Halloween, and the darkest stretch of the winter: the earliest sunset, the shortest day, the latest sunrise and the day 5 pm sunsets come back.

The band under your answer is your whole day, midnight to midnight, coloured by how high the Sun is. Press Fall back and watch the sky slide an hour to the left under the 5 pm line. The sky didn't change. The clock did.

Live near a time-zone line? Use Change next to your time zone. In Arizona we also ask whether your clocks change, because the Navajo Nation uses daylight saving time and the rest of the state, including the Hopi Reservation, doesn't.

What changes on Nov 1

Under federal law (15 U.S.C. §260a (opens in a new tab)), daylight saving time runs from 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March to 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November. In 2026 that's Sunday, Nov 1 at 2:00 a.m.: clocks go back to 1:00 a.m. (NIST (opens in a new tab)). The next changes are Sun, Mar 14, 2027 (spring forward) and Sun, Nov 7, 2027 (fall back).

Because the clock moves back an hour, every sun time moves an hour earlier on the clock. Sunset in New York goes from 5:53 pm to 4:52 pm: 60 minutes from the clock and one more because the days are still getting shorter. Mornings get the hour back: New York's sunrise goes from 7:25 am to 6:26 am.

Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands and Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) don't use daylight saving time, so nothing jumps there.

How we compute it

Your ZIP becomes a point: the center of the ZIP code area from the US Census. We look it up in files that come with this page, so your ZIP never leaves your browser. Then we compute the Sun's position with Astronomy Engine (opens in a new tab), using the same definitions as the U.S. Naval Observatory: sunset is when the top of the Sun touches a flat horizon, and civil twilight ends when the Sun's center is 6° below it.

We checked our times against the Naval Observatory for 10 cities on 4 dates: all 160 times match to the minute. Across every day of 2026 and 2027 (21,844 times), the biggest difference is 1 minute. Details on how it works.

Questions

When do the clocks fall back in 2026?

Sunday, Nov 1, 2026 at 2:00 a.m. local time: clocks go back to 1:00 a.m. Federal law runs daylight saving time from 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March to 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November.

How much earlier will it get dark?

About an hour on the clock, plus a minute or two because the days are still getting shorter. In New York, sunset goes from 5:53 pm on Sat, Oct 31 to 4:52 pm on Sun, Nov 1.

What time is sunset on Halloween?

It depends on where you are. On Sat, Oct 31, 2026 the sun sets at 5:53 pm in New York, 6:01 pm in Los Angeles and 5:46 pm in Chicago. It stays light enough to see outside for about half an hour after sunset.

When is the earliest sunset of the year?

In early December in most of the US, not on the shortest day. New York's earliest sunset is Dec 8, Los Angeles' is Dec 4 and Seattle's is Dec 10.

When do sunsets get back to 5 pm?

New York gets 5 pm sunsets back on Jan 21, 2027, Chicago on Jan 28 and Boston on Feb 3. In Miami, Phoenix and Honolulu the sun never sets before 5 pm.

Does Arizona change its clocks?

No. Arizona stays on standard time all year, except the Navajo Nation, which does change its clocks. The Hopi Reservation, inside the Navajo Nation, does not. Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa don't change either.

Is daylight saving time becoming permanent?

Not as of Oct 11, 2026. The House passed the Sunshine Protection Act (H.R. 139) 308–117 on July 14, 2026. The Senate received it on July 15 and sent it to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; there has been no Senate vote. Clocks fall back on Sunday, Nov 1, 2026 as usual.

Why is the earliest sunset before the shortest day?

Because clock days are always 24 hours but solar days are not. In late December each solar day is almost half a minute longer than 24 hours, so solar noon drifts later on the clock. That moves the earliest sunset to before the Dec 21 solstice and the latest sunrise to after it.
